Mr. Jeong-gu Cho, you stood at the center of this miracle. Driven by a spirit to rebuild your country’s economy and infrastructure and advance the principles of democracy, you created the SAMBU Construction Company, a respected international corporation that was at the forefront in building houses, apartments, roads, hydraulic power plants and more. Under your leadership for 45 years, SAMBU created thousands of jobs that helped to build Korea’s middle class. You established Korea’s Society of Construction, which set standards and codes that revolutionized the nation’s construction industry. You served as chairman of the Construction Society of Korea for 12 years and then were named honorary chair for life. You established a vocational training center to produce skilled construction workers and were instrumental in establishing a research institute, the International Contractors Association of Korea. You were appointed as the policy advisor to the Minister of Construction, and later served four years as an elected member of the National Assembly. Your achievements touch urban planning, design and development ; transportation, economic development, public works, housing and public administration. Through your dedication and life’s work, you helped build a modern capitalistic economy that has become a working democracy. In recognition of your outstanding leadership, lifelong commitment to democratic principles, and extraordinary accomplishments of behalf of your homeland, Cleveland State University posthumously confers upon you the degree of Doctor of Urban Affairs, Honoris Causa.
